Notes From The Museums: Pretty Porch Parts

The May-Stringer Museum presents a pretty picture atop one of Brooksville’s hills. The lovely Victorian-style building captures the eye at the curve on Jefferson Street. There are a number of features of the house that contribute to its charm. There is a tiny detail that adds to the pleasant appearance of this painted lady…defined by having three or more colors of paint highlight architectural features. That little detail is the bullseye rosettes that decorate the porch columns and over a doorway. About four inches in diameter, they have painted the burnt red that carries over to other features as well. The rosettes are like earrings that bring a splash of interest to a lady. Only in this case, the painted lady at 601 Museum Court has 40 rosettes to capture an admirer’s eye! Little details like simple carved circles add to the attraction of one of Brooksville’s oldest buildings.
