The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is searching for the origin of a social media post threatening a mass shooting at Central High School in Brooksville this week, which they have determined to be fake.

According to the Hernando County School District (HCSD), on Oct. 23, a student at Central High School told school administrators and the School Resource Officer about receiving a post from “Alex Anderson” threatening to carry out a mass shooting at the school on Oct. 24.

The HCSD told investigators that the post, which was first circulated in 2021, had resurfaced in several states across the country.

The HCSO said it is investigating the incident to identify those responsible for making and sharing the bogus post.

In the meantime, the HCSD has asked parents, students and staff to avoid sharing the post and they will maintain all safety protocols at the school.
