The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is asking the public to help them solve a five-year-old homicide case. HCSO Deputy Public Information Office (PIO) Michael Terry said that the case began in the early morning hours of Oct. 16, 2018, when multiple gunmen entered a Spring Hill home belonging to Alek Smith. While his girlfriend and their infant slept in nearby bedrooms, Smith confronted the home invaders, who subsequently killed him.
Though investigators have worked on the case since it happened, they still need the public’s help to solve it.
“Even the smallest piece of information may be helpful,” Terry said.

Tipsters may also contact Hernando County Crime Stoppers by calling 866-990-TIPS (8477), texting **TIPS from a cell phone or logging onto http://www.hernandocountycrimestoppers.com. All Crime Stoppers tips are anonymous and tipsters may be eligible for a $5,000 cash reward.
The Florida Sheriff’s Association Criminal Apprehension Assistance Program (CAAP) is also offering an enhanced $5,000 reward for information leading to learning the identity of those responsible for the killing of Alek Smith.
That reward is offered in addition to the Crime Stoppers reward. for a total of $10,000 cash for information related to the case. Tips must be submitted through Hernando Crime Stoppers in order to be eligible for the total $10,000 for the cash reward.
