Griswold Family Celebrates a New Beginning

The Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative, Inc. hosted a dedication ceremony where the Griswold family received the keys to their new home in a touching display of generosity and community spirit. This event marked a significant milestone for the Mid Florida Community Services, Inc. (MFCS) “House to Home” Program, showcasing the collaborative efforts of various organizations and individuals to provide a deserving family with the gift of homeownership.

Situated on LaBella Street, off California Street in Brooksville, the homes constructed through the House to Home program embody a unique initiative. While targeting families and individuals with a demonstrated need for housing, this program enables those with the financial ability to own a home, even if they wouldn’t qualify for a traditional mortgage. These homes represent the first fully completed projects since MFCS acquired the home-building program following the dissolution of Habitat for Humanity of Hernando County, Inc.

The House to Home program goes beyond financial considerations. In addition to income requirements, eligibility is determined through a comprehensive assessment of the applicant’s need for improved housing, financial capability for homeownership, and willingness to fulfill program requirements. The emphasis is on providing a hand-up, not a hand-down, aiming to create a safe and welcoming environment for families in the community.

The proceeds from sales at the House to Home Thrift Store, located at 19450 Cortez Boulevard in Brooksville, play a crucial role in funding home construction. The thrift store is critical for generating the necessary funds to support the program’s mission.

The dedication ceremony was a testament to the outpouring of support from various community organizations. “Quilling for Charity” of Forest Oaks Lutheran Church contributed handmade quilts, bringing warmth, peace, and comfort to the Griswold family’s new home. The Kiwanis Club of the Adventure Coast stocked the family’s food pantry to ensure a warm welcome.

Bagels and Beyond joined the celebration by donating a breakfast bagel spread for the house dedication event. Mid Florida Community Services, Inc. went above and beyond, presenting the Griswold family with a thoughtful housewarming basket. The basket contained symbolic items such as honey for the sweetness of life, a candle to guide them in dark times, wine for moments of celebration, olive oil for good health, and bread to ensure they never know hunger.

The completion of the homes wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated efforts of Mid Florida Community Services, Inc., Cemex, Lowes, Pickett-Ace Hardware Store, Brooksville Garden Club, “Quilling for Charity” of Forest Oaks Lutheran Church, Bagels and Beyond, and the Kiwanis Club of the Adventure Coast. These businesses and organizations played pivotal roles in turning the dream of homeownership into a reality for the Griswold family.

During the dedication ceremony, the Griswold family expressed their gratitude, emphasizing that owning a home had always been their dream. They extended heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in making this dream come true, highlighting the power of community collaboration in transforming lives.

The Griswold House Dedication is a shining example of how a community coming together can create a lasting impact and bring dreams to life. Through the House to Home program, Mid Florida Community Services, Inc. continues to make strides in providing affordable housing solutions and fostering a sense of belonging for families in need.
