Have you ever attended a New Year’s Eve party that was so much fun that you got to ring in the New Year twice? Well, that’s exactly what will happen when the German American Club of Spring Hill sponsors a New Year’s Eve Dance on Sunday, Dec. 31, at Hernando County Shrine Club, 13400 Montour St, Brooksville.
“While we’ve had our previous New Year’s Eve celebrations during the day, we decided this year to plan an evening party,” explained Jack Yaskulski, secretary of the German American Club of Spring Hill. “This year, we will ring in the New Year at night, and twice at 7 p.m. our time, which will be midnight in Germany, and at midnight our time.”
Formal to semi-formal attire will be required for this occasion, featuring music by Manni Daum; who is a songwriter and producer with over 60 albums to his credit and has written over 500 songs. Daum heads up a trio consisting entirely of German natives, which performs frequently at German-American Clubs throughout the area and at Oktoberfest festivities.
“Manni Daum will be performing the polka, the cha cha, the tango, the waltz, ballroom, a little bit of soul, slow dances,” said Yaskulski. “Music perfect for dancing.”
Doors open at 7 p.m., with dancing from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. This event is ‘BYOB,’ as well as Bring Your Own Dinner, as guests will be allowed to bring their own food for their table.
“We will have coffee and cake and subs with a champagne toast at midnight included with admission,” said Yaskulski.
Guests also can feast their eyes on the bright, ebullient decorations that promise to add color and festivity to this NYE celebration.
Yaskulski shared, “We’ll have decorations, table settings, centerpieces and a supply of noisemakers will be on hand.”
The New Year’s Eve celebration is an annual tradition at the German-American Club of Spring Hill, founded by Christa and Fritz Neumann in 1982, with Friedel Rohn serving as the club’s first president. The club hosts this and many other functions throughout the year, including an annual Octoberfest event. The club’s current president is Heribert Thomas.
The German-American Club’s New Year’s Eve celebration stands among numerous NYE parties across the world. New Year’s Eve observes the last day of the year in the Gregorian calendar, Dec. 31. People around the world typically celebrate this landmark day by attending all varieties of public events, including the widescale celebrations that take place at Times Square in New York City or Trafalgar Square in London. They also might choose to participate in specially scheduled church services or observe the holiday privately at home. And as they enjoy everything from masquerade balls to costume parties to concerts and fireworks displays, generally joining together in a vibrant chorus of the Scottish tune “Auld Lang Syne,” they welcome the dawn of a vibrant new year. As an interesting side note, New Year’s Eve is a public holiday in places like the Philippines, Latvia and San Marino (https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/common/new-year-eve).
