A Brooksville woman has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after she allegedly accused her partner of being unfaithful, then shot him.
Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Deputy Public Information Officer (PIO) Michael Terry said that before 7: 30 a.m. on Jan. 28, deputies responded to a call reporting that a man had been shot at a residence on Timber Lane in Brooksville. The caller identified the shooter as 49-year-old Christine Lynn Turaniczo who had left the scene after the incident driving a green Nissan truck.
According to Terry, HCSO deputies found Turaniczo driving at a high rate of speed on Lake Lindsay Road where she was taken into custody without incident.
Meanwhile, deputies who responded to the shooting scene found the victim in his bedroom having sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
He was taken by air ambulance to a local trauma center for treatment where he remains in critical condition.
Meanwhile at the scene of the shooting, a witness told deputies that Turaniczo and the shooting victim had been involved in an “on and off again” relationship over the past year.
The witness also said that Turaniczo believed the man was involved with another woman, and on Jan. 27 Turaniczo questioned the man about his whereabouts.
At around 9:45 p.m. that same evening, the witness told investigators that he had heard a “popping sound” and went to Turaniczo’s bedroom to check on her.
“He said Turaniczo indicated everything was fine,” Terry said.
Around 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 28, the witness said that he was awakened by the same popping sound.
This time he went to the victim’s bedroom and found him lying on the floor with Turaniczo standing over him holding a gun.
The witness said Turaniczo retreated to her bedroom following the shooting and fled the scene after he called 9-1-1.
During an interview Turaniczo told detectives that she had left the Timber Lane residence around midnight, and had returned between 6 and 6:30 a.m. where she retrieved a firearm from her safe.
She later admitted to entering the victim’s bedroom where she accused him of cheating. The man then became abusive to her, Turaniczo said, and she said that “she couldn’t take it anymore.”
Terry said that initially Turaniczo said that she shot the man when he lunged at her, but her account of the way that the shooting occurred changed several times during detectives’ interview with her.
Ultimately,Turaniczo was arrested and booked into the Hernando County Detention Center on a felony charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
She is being held without bond.
