By MARVIN BAYNHAM CANDIDATE FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER
Hernando County, which was once a peaceful and charming community, is now facing several challenges that threaten the social fiber of the Hernando County Community.
Unbridled overdevelopment, soaring taxes, and crumbling infrastructure have left residents uncertain and concerned. What was once a paradise for those who sought a natural, quiet, and affordable way of life is now a distant memory.
The Hernando County 2040 Comprehensive Plan is a legislative document that guides future land use and development in the county. The Board of County Commissioners is responsible for the consistency of this plan and its implementation. Private property owners’ rights must be protected, including their rights to development. Although growth is inevitable, it should be smart and calculated.
Elected officials must prioritize the concerns of residents over the interests of developers who fund their campaigns. Retirees and young families are struggling to make ends meet and cannot bear additional taxes.
The Board of County Commissioners is considering a General Obligation (GO) bond or a one-cent sales tax to fund infrastructure needs, which will be placed on the ballot for November. How will the proposed General Obligation bond or sales tax impact residents who are already struggling financially? Why hasn’t the impact fee measure been used to fund the growth already experienced by the county?
Hernando County’s infrastructure will be unable to cope with the already approved development applications and the 1,000+ homes that are pending. We need the Board of County Commissioners to stand up and defend our interests. If they don’t, who will? It’s time to act and secure the future of Hernando County before it’s too late.
