Holding Local Government Accountable: A Call to Action for Citizens

By MARVIN BAYNHAM CANDIDATE FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER

In our constitutional republic, elected officials are entrusted with a solemn duty: to serve the best interests of the people who put them in office. However, recent events in our county have raised serious concerns about the effectiveness and accountability of our local government. It is evident that our elected representatives have lost touch with the needs and aspirations of the citizens they are supposed to serve.

One glaring indicator of this disconnect is the alarmingly low voter turnout in the past three primary elections. Dismal participation at the polls reflects a pervasive sense of disillusionment and apathy among the electorate. When citizens feel their voices are not being heard or their concerns are being ignored, they become disengaged from the political process. This apathy only serves to perpetuate the cycle of neglect and incapability in our local government.

Elected officials must remember that they are not rulers but servants of the people and are accountable to every citizen, regardless of their socioeconomic status or political affiliation. Yet, it seems that some of our representatives have forgotten this fundamental principle. Instead of prioritizing the needs of their constituents, they are more concerned with advancing their own agendas or catering to special interests.

It is time for citizens to reclaim the county from the grip of complacency and incompetence. We must stand up and demand accountability from our elected officials. This means holding them accountable for their actions, demanding transparency in decision-making processes, and actively participating in all county-related processes. We must take a proactive role in shaping the future of our county. This means staying informed about local issues, engaging in constructive dialogue with elected representatives and exercising our right to vote in every election. By doing so, we can send a powerful message to those in power: we will no longer tolerate negligence or incompetence.

The current state of affairs in our local government is unacceptable. Elected officials must remember that they serve at the pleasure of the people, not the other way around. It is incumbent upon every citizen to hold their representatives accountable and work together to create a brighter future for our county. The primary election is on August 20, 2024. Be an informed voter. Good citizens who don’t vote elect bad officials. The time for action is now.
