The Candlelight subdivision includes a long, canal-like Drainage Retention Area (DRA), which has become obstructed by natural vegetation and poses a flood risk during storm season. On May 2, 2024, crews began dredging 186 feet of the DRA on the west side of Candlelight Boulevard between Moonlight Lane and Erin Way to restore water flow.
On the other side of the small bridge spanning the main roadway, another 1,359 feet will be dredged from the portion of the DRA that runs parallel to Candlelight southward toward Cortez Boulevard.
No traffic delays are expected while the project is underway, and it is anticipated to conclude on May 31.
At the May 6 Brooksville City Council meeting, Richard Weeks, public works director, spoke about this project and the recently completed Fernwood Drive project. He gave recognition to Thomas Redding and the entire stormwater crew for creating 731 feet of swale to mitigate the flooding on Fernwood Drive. He said the 731 feet was completely overgrown with years of sedimentation buildup and very thick brush. He was happy to announce that after over a decade of calls to the City regarding the flooding, the Fernwood Stormwater project is complete. City attorney Becky Vose was instrumental in obtaining a temporary easement so that the project could be completed.
