Jennifer Nunez, a dedicated employee of the City of Brooksville, has been honored with the Employee Star Award for her unwavering commitment in stopping a potential cybercrime targeting the fire department. Fire Chief Brad Sufficool presented the award in recognition of Nunez’s vigilance and attention to detail.
Nunez’s sharp observational skills were evident when she identified potential severe irregularities in the fire department’s cell phone bill, including the unauthorized addition of over 20 new lines and four devices. She also noted modifications in the account details indicating potential further changes. Her swift decision to notify the Information Technology (IT) department led to deeper investigations into the vendor, exposing an attempt to fraudulently manipulate the department’s account by someone who was not affiliated with the city of Brooksville.
Thanks to Nunez’s proactive and timely response, the IT department secured the account, averting a significant financial loss that could have amounted to thousands of dollars in unauthorized charges. Chief Sufficool praised Jennifer for her meticulous attention to detail, acknowledging that her actions prevented a hefty financial burden and protected the department’s vital communications infrastructure.
Nunez’s efforts underscore the crucial role that vigilant employees play in protecting municipal resources and services against cyber threats.
