The Board of County Commissioners of Hernando County has passed a resolution to strongly support local law enforcement officers. The resolution acknowledges the critical role these officers play in maintaining community safety, the risks they face daily and their selfless service. The resolution, a significant step in demonstrating unwavering support, officially designates Hernando County as a ‘BLUE’ county in support of law enforcement. It encourages residents to show their support by displaying blue ribbons and lights. The resolution was adopted in a regular session on May 14, 2024.

County Commissioner Allocco thanked law enforcement for their daily dedication and hard work. He highlighted the often-overlooked sacrifices made by uniformed officers to ensure community safety, emphasizing the immense risks they take on.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis expressed gratitude for the strong community support received by his office, emphasizing pride in serving Hernando County. He acknowledged the backing from the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) and the general public, which is only sometimes the case elsewhere. Al Nienhuis highlighted his team’s challenges and the importance of maintaining financial and moral support.

Commissioner Champion also thanked the men and women of the sheriff’s office, stating that they do a fantastic job every day.

Commissioner Hawkins noted, “We recognize the daily risks you face. Beyond serving the community, you engage in volunteer work and outreach activities, significantly contributing to community engagement and fundraisers. Your efforts go a long way.”

A motion to approve the resolution made by Commissioner Allocco and seconded by Commissioner Champion was passed unanimously.
