SPRING HILL – On June 18, early in the morning, a shooting occurred on Stillwater Avenue in Spring Hill. According to a statement from HCSO Deputy PIO Michael Terry, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Operations Center received a 911 call at 5:19 AM in reference to the local shooting.
The person who placed the 911 call was the suspect, Navor Mora, age 24, who advised the police that he had shot his older brother after getting into an argument with him. The deputies provided aid for the victim once they arrived and had him taken to a local trauma center to have his injuries treated.
Mora’s brother is expected to make a full recovery.
Following the reading of his Miranda Rights, Mora informed authorities that he had been in his bedroom when his brother “slid a note under his door calling him a bum and that he needed to get a job,” the statement continued.
After reading his brother’s note, Mora told the authorities that he became angry. Mora then got dressed and holstered his firearm to confront his older sibling. An altercation soon followed as Mora located and subsequently punched his brother on the chin.
A female witness who was in the house attempted to intervene, but she was unable to break up the fight between the two brothers. During the scuffle, Mora fell on top of her, and that is when things escalated. Once he fell, Mora pulled his firearm from its holster and fired multiple shots, the witness noted. He not only struck the victim multiple times, but the female witness also sustained injuries during the argument, Sheriff Al Nienhuis stated in a Tuesday press conference.
The Sheriff noted that the victim had only been visiting Florida from out of state since Saturday and was intending on leaving on Tuesday before the shooting occurred. Nienhuis added, “We certainly do not have a history with the person that came from out of state, and I do not even think the person who did the shooting we have a lot of history with, if any.”
Mora insisted to authorities that he was not trying to kill his brother, but the stated lack of intent would not be enough to avoid consequences. The suspect was arrested following questioning on a charge of Attempted First Degree Homicide and was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center. Mora is being held there without bond.
