The Hernando County Fire Department responded to the strip mall that is home to 4 Corners Pharmacy and Bauknight Insurance at 3:30 am on Monday, Aug. 5.
Hurricane Debby added elements of wind and rain for the fire department to deal with during the ordeal.
When firefighters arrived at the 11000 block of Spring Hill Drive, they found heavy fire emanating from the roof of the building. They initiated a fire attack, but heavy wind caused the fire to spread throughout the entire attic.
Firefighters then took a defensive fire attack strategy using the ladder truck. When a fire is too large to fight with an offensive attack, a defensive attack is used. This includes using hose lines and other equipment from the exterior of the building to protect surrounding areas and prevent the spread of the fire.
The fire was brought under control after 30 minutes of defensive fire attack. There were no injuries reported, but the building is a complete loss.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
