Withlacoochee River Crests Over Weekend

Brooksville, FL—Hernando County Emergency Management announced that the Withlacoochee River reached minor flood stage at the Trilby gauge last week.

The river crested at about 12.4 feet over the weekend. The river began to recede Monday and is expected to fall to just below minor flood stage (12 feet) by Aug. 25. This assessment is subject to change due to weather.

At 12 feet, flooding begins at Lacoochee, Talisman Estates, Riverdale, and River Height Estates.
Sixteen and a half feet is considered major flood stage at the Trilby gauge. In 2017, just after Hurricane Irma, the Withlacoochee River at Trilby reached 17.67 feet.

If you are living in a low-lying area, see flood waters, and decide to evacuate, plan to stay with family, friends, or a hotel and remember to not drive into flood covered roads. Turn round, don’t drown. Be sure to turn off power at your house to avoid any potential fires before evacuating.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the river levels for this weekend by visiting www.Weather.gov/serfc/ to track flooding at the Trilby gauges. If you make the decision to evacuate and need assistance, call 9-1-1.

Residents should be aware of the possibility that water wells and septic systems could become contaminated. Water testing should occur once water recedes. Infrastructure damages and power outages should also be expected.
