The Hernando County Board of County Commissioners has introduced a new initiative called the “Adopt-A-Kennel Program.” This program, explained by Community Services Director Chris Linsbeck at a recent meeting, is legally supported by a Florida statute that allows the Board to take such actions.
The “Adopt-A-Kennel Program” aims to encourage community involvement in supporting animal adoption efforts. Through this program, individuals and organizations can sponsor a kennel at the Hernando County Animal Services facility for at least one year. The cost is $1,200 per year for a dog kennel and $600 per year for a cat kennel. Sponsors can name the animals in their kennels if they don’t already have names and are encouraged to promote these animals on social media to help them get adopted.
The Animal Services Department will manage the program, which includes creating recognition plaques for sponsors, sharing information about the animals for promotional purposes, and recognizing sponsors at the end of the year. The money collected from sponsorships will fund adoption events, improve community outreach, and enhance kennel facilities. Sponsors can also choose to volunteer their time or resources to help care for the animals.
Hernando County Animal Services has always appreciated community volunteers and donations, but this new program offers a way for people to contribute even if they can’t physically be there. Participants are welcome to spend time with the animals they sponsor if they wish. The program is designed to increase the number of adoptions in the county and expand the reach of Hernando County Animal Services. During the meeting, a community member suggested expanding the program to recognize residents who capture, treat, and re-home animals at their own expense. Board Chairwoman Beth Narverud expressed that this policy is a positive step forward, showing the county’s commitment to improving conditions at Hernando County Animal Services.
