On Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) celebrated their annual Constitution Week at VFW Post 10209 in Spring Hill. A longstanding tradition, this event commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution. It features a symbolic ringing of bells for one minute straight, paying homage to the momentous day in 1787 when bells rang out in Philadelphia to celebrate the Constitution’s adoption.
DAR members and the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) brought history to life by donning colonial attire and featuring a color guard led by the SAR. The event was not just a celebration, but also a learning opportunity, with appearances from the Black Robe Regiment, presentations of fun facts about the Liberty Bell, and displays of rare constitutional artifacts. Notable highlights included the recitation of “The Veterans Poem” and “George Washington’s Prayer,” adding a solemn yet inspirational touch to the event.
For those unfamiliar with the DAR, the organization boasts a rich legacy spanning over 125 years, with more than 1,000,000 women joining since its inception. Members, all of whom can trace their lineage back to patriots who fought for American independence, unite to honor their heritage and actively contribute to their communities through charitable efforts, historic preservation and educational outreach.
During the event, it was announced that both the City of Brooksville and the Hernando County Commissioners had proclaimed Sept. 16-22 as Constitution Week. This official recognition provides an excellent opportunity for citizens to reflect on the document that established a more perfect union and secured liberty for future generations.
In a world where civic engagement is more important than ever, Constitution Week serves as a reminder of the foundational principles of the United States and invites all Americans to learn more about the historic document that continues to guide the nation’s course. Whether through the DAR’s ongoing work or the inspiring events held across the country, the legacy of the Constitution remains alive and well.
