The Withlacoochee chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) meets once a month. The group is open to anyone who wants to join as a non-voting associate. To be a full member you must be able to trace your ancestry back to a direct ancestor who supported the cause during the American Revolution. They refer to this person who served in the revolution as your patriot ancestor.
The chapter serves both Hernando and Citrus counties and is very active, meeting monthly at Chinsegut Hill from September to May each year. They recently received an award at the National Congress for the number of members who had become George Washington Fellows. A George Washington fellow is an individual who donates $1,000 to the organization’s “George Washington Endowment Fund,” which is a perpetual endowment that provides financial support for projects which align with the goals of the Sons of the American Revolution. The Withlacoochee Chapter added 26 new Fellows last year – prior to last year, no state had ever before added more than 15 new Fellows in a year.
The Withlacoochee chapter of the SAR supports numerous national programs, including the local production of the podcast Revolutionary War Rarities, which is a top 10 percent rated podcast worldwide, based on total listenership. The podcast focuses on teaching the little-known history around the founding of our country, in 8 to 10 minute blocks, and releases a new episode every other Sunday. The podcast has just started its third year and offers both an audio-only and video format, which makes it a great learning resource for educators and those just interested in history.
The goal is to raise awareness about the revolutionary war and the great sacrifices it took to create the United States.
The SAR is planning events related to the 250th anniversary of the United States and has already started these celebrations with the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, which was celebrated last December. These events will continue, as the effort to gain independence from Britain did, for the next 10 years as the SAR celebrates the Decade of the American Revolution.
