The Hernando Boys and Girls Club after and before-school programs at seven schools in the county closed on Thursday, December 5, 2024. The closure was a surprise to many of the staff, parents and students. The programs will continue at their current locations with a portion of the staff moving over to Kelly Services who are taking over running the programs.

The Hernando County School District (HCSD) provided the Hernando Sun with the following statement. “The closure of the Hernando Boys and Girls Club certainly came as a surprise to us. Since the Boys and Girls Club made their announcement on Thursday, the school district has been working with urgency to find a solution for hundreds of parents who have children enrolled in the Boys and Girls Club’s before or after-school programs.

The school district is in discussion with several local providers to replace B&GC and begin serving families starting in January. In the meantime, the school district will keep all sites open and provide a variety of enrichment activities for those students enrolled in the before and after school program.”

The Hernando County School District (HCSD) sent the following message to families on Thursday, December 5.

“This is an important message for parents with children enrolled in Boys and Girls Club Hernando –

“This afternoon, the Hernando School District was notified by Boys & Girls Club Hernando that they would be closing their operations at all 7 school sites due to financial shortfalls. These closures would be effective immediately starting tomorrow, December 6th. The message emailed to parents from Boys & Girls Club this afternoon is attached here as well.

“Recognizing the impact on our parents with children enrolled in the Boys and Girls Club Hernando, the school district immediately convened an emergency meeting to develop an alternative option for parents. With collaboration from community partners, district and school staff, a solution that focuses on school clubs and enrichment activities at each site has been developed.

“This alternative before and after school plan will be in place from Friday, Dec. 6th through December 21st and will be offered to families at the same cost as their current rate with B&GC. NOTE: all future payments will need to be made by check or money order payable to Hernando School District.

“Starting tomorrow, all seven current B&GC school sites will remain in place but will be operated and staffed by Kelly Services. The school district currently contracts with Kelly Services for classroom substitutes. Many of the Boys & Girls Club staff have joined Kelly Services and will report to their schools tomorrow, providing assistance during the before and after school planned activities.

“Hernando Schools is committed to working with local community partners to develop a long-term solution for the coming new year. We will update parents when that plan is finalized.

“Thank you for your understanding.”
