On Saturday, December 14, the Kiwanis Club of Brooksville held the 50th annual Brooksville Christmas Parade. There were more than 130 entrants in the parade and the streets were lined with thousands of parade-goers.
The Grand Marshall of the parade was Morris Porton. Morris is a former banker and local community leader who is involved in a plethora of activities.
The parade featured many forms of transport, from walkers to horse riders to floats and cars. The parade started on Oakwood Drive behind the Hernando County School District building, it turned left on Howell Avenue and headed up the hill to downtown Brooksville, where it turned left on N Broad St by the Courthouse and ended at the bottom of the hill.
The winner of best overall float for the second year in a row was Edison Ink and Company. It took family members, staff and friends about a month to build. Michael Bell, owner of Edison Ink, is an electrical engineer and he designed the structure featuring a curved keyboard backdrop, a giant guitar and spinning musical notes. The main guitar spans 24 feet, 7 inches. “We do it because we enjoy it. It’s rewarding,” said Bell. Bell notes that they are looking for a home for the giant guitar. Maybe a school or theatre group that could use it for a play.
