The new Muma Children’s Hospital at Tampa General embodies the passion and long-held vision of area philanthropists Pam and Les Muma. Their transformational contribution in late 2023 paved the way for the renaming of the Children’s Hospital, marking the most significant donation to Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and the largest gift ever to any children’s hospital in the region.
Now, the couple’s impact is being felt in a powerful new way – with the reopening of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at TGH Spring Hill, where families and newborns can rely on exceptional providers at life’s earliest moments.
The NICU at TGH Spring Hill has earned a Level II designation from the state of Florida, which enables the hospital to provide specialized care for infants who are born premature, underweight or moderately ill. It will be staffed by a board-certified neonatologist and neonatal nurse practitioner 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“There are no limits to the generosity of Pam and Les Muma,” said Tampa General President and CEO John Couris. “Their contribution to Tampa General in support of the Children’s Hospital will have a meaningful and lasting impact across the state, most especially on the families and children of our community.”
The TGH Spring Hill NICU is an extension of the state-of-the-art, comprehensive pediatric center within the main hospital in Tampa, equipped to handle virtually any situation facing parents and newborns – powered by the vast resources and talent of nationally renowned Tampa General Hospital.
When the Mumas lost their newborn daughter shortly after delivery at TGH in 1973, they became determined to help the hospital build the best newborn intensive care unit in the nation. With a major gift in 2006, they created the Jennifer Leigh Muma Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in honor of their baby girl. The center is known for providing the highest quality of complex care and – coupled with the TGH Women’s Institute – has placed TGH in the Top 10 nationally for Obstetrics and Gynecology by U.S. News and World Report.
In addition, as a leading academic health system, Tampa General and the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine provide a depth of resources, expertise, groundbreaking research and a multidisciplinary approach – all reflected in the world-class care now available in the NICU at TGH Springhill.
