Tampa General Hospital Spring Hill Celebrates NICU Reopening

Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Spring Hill reopened its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. This unit was closed two years ago before Tampa General took over the operation of the hospital. They intend to keep increasing the services that they offer at the Spring Hill hospital. TGH Spring Hill states that the “NICU will be staffed by a board-certified neonatologist or a board-certified neonatal nurse practitioner 24 hours a day and seven days a week.”

This is a level 2 NICU, which means that they can assist babies born at or after 32 weeks.

Tampa General Hospital President and CEO John Couris explained at the opening, “A level 2 NICU is outstanding, but I know that Tara has plans that continue to go to a level three and really be a competitor in this market. So the community needs it, everyone here needs it. I am beyond blessed to be part of this system and so thankful that you all in Spring Hill welcomed us; encouraged us.” He was referring to Tara Castaneda, Director of Women’s and Children’s Services at Tampa General Hospital Spring Hill.

Couris went on to request, “I’m only asking for one thing: be patient. Continue to be great collaborators; continue to be great innovators with us. Continue to be great partners because we will stand with you side by side to not only build what we’re building here but to also support the entire and larger community that we’re here to support.”

The hospital currently has about 70 to 75 deliveries a month. This is almost double where they were last year. Before Tampa General took over, they had around 35 to 40 deliveries a month. On average, 10-15 percent of babies need a NICU and stay there for two to five
days.
