Academia Hernando is inviting adult learners to explore the fascinating history of Spanish shipwrecks off the Florida coastline with its upcoming Spring Lecture Series. The next lecture, titled “Florida’s Spanish Shipwreck History: A Survey of Treasure Salvaged off Florida’s Coastline,” will be held on Friday, January 31, at 10 a.m.
The lecture, presented by numismatic expert Daniel Frank Sedwick, will delve into the remarkable stories of Spanish shipwrecks lost and salvaged off Florida’s shores. The presentation will highlight significant wrecks, including those from the storm-tossed Spanish Treasure Fleets of 1622, 1715 and 1733. These wrecks span from Key West to Melbourne along Florida’s eastern coastline, following the Gulf Stream from the Straits of Florida.
Sedwick, a Florida native, will focus primarily on modern salvage operations, discussing the treasure recovered from these wrecks, such as gold and silver coins, ingots and jewels. The presentation promises to reveal surprising and captivating details about the historical treasures found in recent years.
