On January 14, Pasco-Hernando State College held their first District Board of Trustees meeting of the new year. Many community leaders met to discuss a variety of topics ranging from course revisions to the school’s legislative requests to the recognition of Dr. Karin Glessner.

Dr. Glessner has worked as an educator with PHSC for the last 16 years and has most recently served as the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at the college’s Spring Hill campus. She has also posted several papers on Pasco-Hernando’s Academia portal on the career and college self-efficacy of middle school students in particular.

She was recognized for her years of tireless service and will be receiving a certificate to make it official. The award comes at the right time, too, as Dr. Glessner is preparing to set sail for retirement. She may be preparing to step down, but she is excited for a new adventure with her husband at her side.

“I will miss the interactions with students and the collaboration with all my colleagues at the Spring Hill campus and college wide […] In the future, my husband and I are looking forward to exploring the world a bit,” Dr. Glessner said. “We already have a cruise scheduled in the summer, and to spend more time with each other and our family.

One of her last acts in her role at the college has been helping students with registration for the spring semester. She joked at the board of trustees meeting that, “There has never been a dull moment […] what I will not miss is the day after purge that we just experienced [on January 13].”

Through the efforts of Dr. Glessner and the rest of the faculty, more than 70 percent of graduates from PHSC “are working in or closely related to their field of study,” the college’s website stated.

It was noted at the board of trustees meeting that Pasco-Hernando has also been “relatively more effective” at retaining students (67.2 percent) than other schools within a thousand students of PHSC’s enrollment (such as Pensacola State College).

This number can be attributed to the work of stalwart professors and staff members that have worked diligently to make the Bobcats’ home the best it can be, and they are taking actions to move up into the top ten in this statistic in the near future.

Her invaluable skills will be missed, and her legacy will set a high bar for future educators to strive for. “Dr. Glessner, thank you again for your great service,” said Dr. Pisors, President, PHSC.

Stay tuned for the Sun’s coverage on PHSC’s legislative asks as well as new and adjusted coursework. The college has plenty more on the docket moving forward into February with a ribbon cutting for their renovated welding lab on Valentine’s Day.
