“Our defense is playing lights out,” Coach Hughes said. “We are starting to come together, so real proud of that […] Offense, it always takes time, but when the chemistry is there, our offense is very explosive, and I can’t wait to watch it keep developing.”
The first quarter came and went with both teams getting a feel for each other. Both squads put together nine-plus play possessions that drove inside of their opponent’s 25 yard lines and ended with turnovers on downs.
The second time the Green and Black got their hands on the ball offensively, they got to work. They capped off a four-play drive with a 55-yard pass from Quarterback Karly Pasmore to Wide Receiver Iona Leverock. The receiver snatched the ball away from a near interception by the defender and turned up field for the long touchdown catch and run.
Defenses would reign supreme for the rest of the first half before Weeki got things going again on their only drive of the third period. On the eighth play of the ensuing possession, Pasmore threw her second passing touchdown, this time to Sophomore Joelys Rodriguez, in the front left corner of the endzone.
The Hornets’ offense and defense complemented each other the entire night, but no moment encapsulated this more than early in fourth frame. Up 13 with the visitors driving on the edge of the redzone, the Hornets pressured and picked Sunlake’s quarterback.
On the very next play, Weeki Wachee pulled out a play they had employed periodically throughout the night. Senior Reese Halter caught a Pasmore pass over the middle before tossing the ball to Junior Delanie Evans. She took the pitch and sprinted down the left sideline for the 58-yard scoring scamper to ice the game.
“[The play] is one of our option plays,” said Coach Hughes. “We have a lot of things off of it, but it is one that is very successful for the last couple years […] Karly Pasmore always makes good throws, and then Reese Halter is a big piece. Then Delanie, she is one of the best around here. Delanie Evans really takes it to the house all the time, and I am really proud of her.”
Weeki’s head coach added that some of the girls on his team had crossover with his girls’ basketball team. The resulting overlap has caused some slight complications in preparation for this flag season.
That did not seem to affect the home team on Thursday, though, as the talented Hornets took down the newly minted Seahawks squad with relative ease. The Hornets’ coach was pleased with how his crew performed, and he was happy to be able to let his younger players get some extra experience.
“[Sunlake] played a great game tonight,” Coach Hughes said. “Really proud of our girls overall […] I am real proud of the defense.”
