Academia Hernando will conclude its Spring 2025 Lecture Series on Friday, February 28, with a presentation titled “The Immune System: Will We Survive Foreign Invaders?” The lecture, beginning at 10 a.m. at The Welcome Om Center, 4260 Lake in the Woods Drive, will be delivered by Dr. Linda Young, president of Academia Hernando.

Dr. Young holds a Ph.D. in environmental health and has an extensive background in microbiology and immunology. Her career includes research on pathogenic bacteria in oysters, collaborating with agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration. She conducted research at the FDA’s shellfish research facility on Dauphin Island, Alabama, during the summers.

With 25 years of teaching experience, Dr. Young has served on the faculties of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Jacksonville State University and Motlow State Community College in Tennessee. She has been recognized as a professor emerita for her significant academic contributions.

In her upcoming lecture, Dr. Young aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the immune system, including its components such as barriers, immune cells, antibodies and chemicals. She will discuss how the immune system protects the body and retains memory of previous exposures. Additionally, the lecture will cover strategies to enhance immune function through diet and exercise, as well as explanations of vaccine mechanisms.

The Spring Lecture Series, which began on January 10, comprises eight lectures and an inclusive bus excursion. Individual lectures are available for $15 each, subject to seating availability.
