A Hernando County man was arrested early Thursday morning on multiple charges, including driving under the influence, firearm possession and drug offenses, following a traffic stop, authorities said.
At approximately 2:44 a.m. on March 6, a Hernando County Sheriff’s Office traffic deputy observed a vehicle following too closely behind another on Commercial Way, just south of Breakwater Boulevard.
Deputy M. McNeeley initiated a traffic stop and, upon approaching the driver, identified as Anthony Smith, 35, detected the odor of alcohol, the sheriff’s office said.
After administering a series of field sobriety tests, deputies arrested Smith for DUI. While taking him into custody, authorities discovered a loaded and chambered firearm in his possession. Smith, a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing firearms.
A search of Smith’s vehicle uncovered more than 500 grams of marijuana, officials said.
Smith was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center, where a breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol level of .140 percent, nearly twice the legal limit of .08.
He was charged with DUI, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, using a firearm while under the influence, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and refusal to sign a citation.
Smith’s bond was set at $5,250.
