People bring mementos to family reunions. Usually, they bring photographs or letters that tell the stories of ancestors and occasions. Jackie Lowman Carlton was able to share a special memory of her grandfather, C. L. Lowman at a recent Lowman reunion: the plaque installed at the Hernando County Hospital when it was built in 1936. The 24-bed hospital was located at the apex of Broad Street, Jefferson Street and Mildred Avenue. The plaque is now on display at the May-Stringer Museum, appropriately, in the doctor’s office.
C.L. Lowman was a county commissioner at the time. The plaque memorializes a time almost 90 years ago when among the other leaders were names like McKethan, Ayers, Simmons, Harvard, Creekmore and Coogler. Your family names may not be cast in bronze, but the mementos you bring to reunions or keep in shoe boxes are just as fascinating.
