Below are a few games we think are the matchups to watch for this week in Hernando County for high school basketball on the girls end.
Weeki Wachee (14-6) at Crystal River (14-4): Easily the best match of the week is when Weeki Wachee travels north to face a very good Crystal River team. The Pirates are one of the best clubs that the Hornets will see all season long and if Weeki Wachee wants to get back into the postseason, beating a team like Crystal River would go a long way. The game takes place Tuesday evening Jan. 21 at 7:30pm in Crystal River.
Zephyrhills (14-7) at Springstead (5-15): Brooklyn Glides has been leading the way for Springstead in scoring, averaging around 13 points per game. The Eagles have struggled thus far this season and they now have another tough opponent on their hands when they face Zephyrhills on Thursday Jan. 23 at 7:30pm at the Eagles’ Nest. The Bulldogs are one of Pasco County’s top teams and it could be a long night for the Eagles.
Nature Coast Technical (9-8) at Crystal River (14-4): After winning three games in a row, Nature Coast has dropped two straight games against Springstead and Hernando. Now the Sharks are looking to get back to their winning ways and will have to do so against a very good Crystal River team. The Pirates are one of the top teams in central Florida and if the Sharks want to be contenders, this would be a huge game to win. The game will be on Crystal River’s turf on Friday Jan. 24 at 7:30pm.
Hernando (8-10) at Bushnell South Sumter (12-6): Hernando has continued inching themselves towards the .500 mark and this week is a big opportunity to get above that. To get there, however, the Leopards will need to knock off Sumter County powerhouse Bushnell South Sumter, who currently sits at a record of 12-6. The Raiders are playing some good basketball right now and they will be a great challenge. This game will be played at South Sumter High School at 6pm on Jan. 22.
Hernando Christian (17-1) at Academy at the Lakes (8-8): The Lions only have one loss on the season and that came against Bishop McLaughlin earlier this season. Hernando Christian has bounced back and now faces another tough Pasco County club in Academy at the Lakes, who comes in with a record of 8-8. The Lions are aiming to win a district championship and a win over the Wildcats would help. HCA will be on the road for this game which starts at 6pm on Jan. 24.
