Brooksville–Central hosted a two-day preseason baseball classic with Springstead, Fivay, and Weeki Wachee on Feb. 11 and Feb. 13, 2020.
Preseason classics are essential for coaches to observe how their players have progressed over practices and learn about the incoming talent.
Preparation may be different from coach to coach. Weeki Wachee baseball coach Patrick McHugh and Springstead’s baseball coach Shawn Laferty tell us how they are getting their players prepared for the upcoming 2020 season.
Patrick McHugh is starting his ninth year at Weeki Wachee.
“It’s mainly to knock the rust off competing against other teams …. try to keep everyone fresh and ready to go,” McHugh said. “I have a great group of kids and are ready to, hopefully, have a successful season this year.”
Springstead’s Shawn Laferty has been with the program for 11 years and six years as the Eagles’ varsity coach.
“You practice every day, as much as you can. You’ve got to keep working and keep grinding. The preseason is something to get us ready and to see what they can do,” Laferty said.
