BROOKSVILLE- If there were any lingering ideas about students and student-athletes taking part in any scheduled or make-up events for the 2019-2020 school year, the Hernando School District has made up its mind.

Saturday morning, parents, students, teachers and coaches awoke to the news that the Hernando School District would be canceling all of its events for the remainder of the academic year. With the cancellations go any chances of making up any athletic events, prom dances or grad bash trips.

High school sports within Hernando County is now officially canceled for the remainder of the year, including baseball, softball, track and field and spring football, which was slated to start in late April. Many Tampa Bay area schools were supposed to be coming off of their spring breaks as of last week, but because of the ever-growing threat of COVID-19, Hernando School District followed suit like many other neighboring school boards.

It’s a disappointing end to the prep sports campaign in Hernando County, which looked to have plenty of promise in the ranks of baseball and softball alike. All five public schools, Central, Hernando, Nature Coast, Springstead and Weeki Wachee we’re right in the middle of their respective seasons.

Schools remain closed at least through April 15 as the district turns to online learning solutions.  Only time will tell if fall season activities for the 2020-2021 school year will be affected. Amongst the sports that could be impacted if closures continue is football and swimming. We will keep you informed here at the Hernando Sun with any updates as it pertains to Hernando County School District announcements.
