A Storm Surge Watch is now in effect for coastal Hernando County. A Storm Surge Watch means life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, is possible somewhere within this area within the next 48 hours. There is potential for 2 to 4 feet of storm surge above ground level on Saturday (6/6) night into Sunday (6/7) morning, especially at times of high tide. High rain chances are also expected across the entire area, with showers and isolated thunderstorms possible at any time. A Flood Watch and Coastal Flood Statement is also in effect until 8 p.m. on Sunday.
IMPACTS
• Prepare for a life-threatening surge of 2 to 4 feet above ground level, having possible significant impacts across the Nature Coast, including Aripeka, Hernando Beach, Bayport and Pine Island, during times of high tide Saturday night into Sunday. Potential impacts in this area include:
– Areas of inundation with storm surge flooding accentuated by waves. Damage to several buildings, mainly near the coast.
– Sections of near-shore escape routes and secondary roads become weakened or washed out, especially in usually vulnerable low spots.
– Moderate damage to marinas, docks, boardwalks, and piers.
– Several small craft broken away from moorings, especially in unprotected anchorages.
– Note: Coastal flooding/storm surge values may be higher or lower depending on the future track of Tropical Storm Cristobal.
• Gusty winds, frequent lightning, and isolated tornadoes or waterspouts possible.
