Mental Health Jeopardy

In the classic game Jeopardy, contestants select question and answer categories attached to dollar amounts. Yet in the case of a local variation of this popular game, the message is simple: Mental health is priceless.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), represented locally by NAMI Hernando, is hosting NAMIWalks YourWay Hernando Oct. 10 “to celebrate mental health for all.” NAMI is, according to an organizational website, “the nations’ largest grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness.” (https://namihernando.org/about-nami-hernando)

This year’s NAMIWalks is a virtual event in which donors can participate anywhere, doing any activity they like. And The iEmpower Club, a youth-driven group that seeks to educate community teens about critical teen health topics, has found a novel and youth-friendly way to support NAMIWalks.

The iEmpower Club is a division of Be Empowered Teens and Youth based at The WellCome OM Center in Spring Hill; and claims as part of its mission “to provide the support, resources, and skills that teens need to improve their confidence and mental health.” To help raise awareness and support mental health resources in the Hernando community, the club is hosting an online jeopardy game on mental health & wellness for teens & parents Friday, October 9 at 7 PM. All proceeds go toward the NAMIWalks event and therefore, toward the support of mental health resources in the Hernando community.

For a donation of $5 per person, teen and parent participants can test their knowledge of mental health information through a specialized game of Jeopardy.

“Most questions will be about mental health. Some will include physical health questions, as physical and mental health are closely linked,” said Sarina Singh, Program Director at Be Empowered. “There will be a few fun random questions as well.”

The Jeopardy Fund-Raiser for Mental Health and Wellness will be hosted by iEmpower Club students.

“The iEmpower Club (the student-led community service group of Be EMPOWERED) came up with Jeopardy as a way to fundraise for the NAMIWalks event on October 10th,” said Singh. “As a club, the students are dedicated to improving mental health for teens in the community, and contributing to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) shows our dedication to improving the mental health resources available.”

‘Surprise prizes’ will be offered as a part of the Mental Health Jeopardy experience.

“There are prizes for winning!” said Singh. “But the prizes will not be revealed until game day.”
