Summer is upon us and the Hernando County Public Library System is ready to bridge the gap between semesters with the new summer reading program. The program provides community connection, learning, and fun for kids ages 3 to 18. Everything will kick off June 21st and go through August 7th.
This year’s theme, which is chosen yearly by the Collaborative Summer Library Program, is “Tails and Tales.” It will focus on stories celebrating animals and the special place they hold in our lives.
The program pairs readings with age appropriate activities, virtual storytimes, and take home crafts. Kids can even receive a special prize for completing the “Tails and Tales” reading log available at all branches. If you’re looking for something to do as a family, there will also be weekly outdoor storytimes in Hernando Park.
Registration is required for most programs and must be completed 14 days before each event. Space is limited so please register in advance on the library’s website (https://hernandocounty.librarycalendar.com/). In order to maintain a safe and healthy environment the Hernando County Library will hold most activities outside, weather permitting, or socially distanced inside the branches.
In addition to “Tails and Tales,” there will also be “Reading with the Rays” where your child can earn two tickets to a Rays game by racking up 24 hours of reading time throughout the summer.
Justin King, the Youth Services Librarian, is very excited to introduce a new event for the 8-12 age range this year, a Pokémon Snap Scavenger Hunt. The West Hernando and Brooksville branches are the perfect hiding places for Pokémon, so bring the kids to play Pokémon Snap in real life and win a Poké Prize Pack!
