Introduction
I am the type of person that would move mountains to find the truth even if it meant risking my life. Some people would describe me as nosy, snoopy, meddlesome, intrusive, or maybe even go as far as saying I am annoying. But I do not see it as that, I see myself as a liberator of the truth or a truth vigilante and may be a tad persistent at times. Still you have to go with what you’ve got.
Some people say to be able to find the truth you have to stick to the books, but in my experience it isn’t always that black and white. Sometimes you have to look in between the lines to really grasp the truth.
For as long as I can remember the unexplainable has been happening to my hometown of Cape Fear. And yes, Cape Fear absolutely lives up to its name. As you have probably gathered so far, that is why when I am not at school I am solving mysterious crimes with the best of them.
I have a best friend and her name is Harper. She may not be completely thrilled about my hobby of sleuthing but she puts up with it. Although she does ask me on a daily basis why I don’t obsess over my appearance and boys as a past time instead of gruesome crime scenes and murders. I just roll my eyes and tell her, “What’s the fun in that?”
Chapter 1
This week is the ninth week of summer and probably one of the hottest. Sweat is pouring down my face as the wind from the open top of my car is blowing my hair in every direction. I had opened the top a second ago hoping it would cool me down, but it just blew hot air in my face. Ugh, why is the summer always so hot? Why can’t it be a nice inbetween of not too hot and not too cold?
Anyways, I am currently on my way to the Cape Fear Fourth of July celebration for the firework show. The fireworks have been my favorite part of the festivities for as long as I can remember. I always loved the beautiful designs the fireworks made in the sky. They always made me wonder how people were able to capture such beauty in a tiny bottle.
But Cape Fear doesn’t have the regular barbecue and fireworks celebration. We do things a little differently. At 7:00 am, we have a reenactment of the signing of the Declaration of Independence at Town Hall. (Yes, just like the real Declaration of Independence we have 56 people from the city government sign it.) Then after that snooze fest, we party like it’s 1999. It lasts all day and goes well into the night. Later that night, around one or two in the morning, we shoot off fireworks and the neighboring towns hate us for it. They always complain about how noisy we are with all of the partying, fireworks, and shouting.
