WEEKI WACHEE- In what has been a very busy off-season for high school football teams in the coaching circles, there’s another school out of Hernando County that’s now searching for a head football coach.
Chris Cook announced to his team last week that he would not be returning as the head coach at Weeki Wachee. Cook stated that due to family reasons, he had to step away as the program’s head coach. During his three seasons at the helm for the Hornets, Cook compiled a record of 6-22 and his best season was in the coronavirus shortened 2020 campaign when the team went 3-5.
The announcement comes at a very inopportune time for the program, as the Florida High School Athletic Association just announced its new metro/suburban redistricting for the entire state. The new district that Weeki Wachee will be in is called 2-Suburban, Region 3, District 11 and the Hornets will be with Holiday Anclote, Central, Hudson, and Nature Coast.
Weeki Wachee’s vacancy for football becomes the second one of the off-season, as Earl Garcia III stepped down back in December but has been recently replaced by former Clearwater Countryside defensive coordinator John Scargle. The Hornets will have to find someone who can revitalize a program that has never finished a season with a record above the .500 mark.
Last season for Weeki Wachee, the Hornets were outscored by a total of 399-16 and went 0-10. Spring football for teams in the state of Florida is slated to start on April 25th (non-contact) and on April 30th teams can start hitting. With the turnaround being very soon, Weeki Wachee will look to move quickly towards filling the void left behind by Cook.
