Hernando County residents will learn how they may safely respond to active shooter incidents during classes offered by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), an active shooter incident involves one or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area using one or more firearms. In 2020, there were 40 active shooter incidents in the U.S. the FBI said.
Deputy Public Information Officer (PIO) Michael Terry said that response to active shooter situations is routine training for HCSO deputies. Still, public awareness is also important.
“Should an incident like this occur, there could be crucial minutes of time before law enforcement officers arrive on the scene,” Terry said. “Sheriff Al Nienhuis and the men and women of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office want to emphasize that your awareness and preparedness are as important as our training in keeping your community safe.”
During the sessions, HCSO personnel will share information from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), FEMA, and the FBI, along with videos, on how to react to an active shooter incident.
Sessions are slated for April 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the HCSO headquarters, 18900 Cortez Blvd. in Brooksville. Firearms are not permitted in the building
Those who attend must be 15 years of age or older.
