Federal measure would help faith-based groups get grants

Faith-based organizations would have an easier time applying for and receiving federal grants and other funding under a measure sponsored by U.S. Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott.

Specifically, The Lifting Local Communities Act would codify religious protections in the delivery of dollars across federal social service programs, and prohibit discrimination against religious organizations in receipt and administration of Federal financial assistance.

“Faith-based organizations are constantly responding to crises within our communities, yet they often face difficulties seeking federal resources,” Scott said. “This bill will ensure they do not face federal discrimination for their deeply-held religious beliefs, enabling them to continue uplifting local communities across the nation.”

According to Rubio, faith-based organizations contribute nearly $1.2 trillion to the U.S. Economy and provide services to families and individuals who have hit hard times or are struggling to make ends meet.

Federal policymakers have historically acknowledged the vital role of faith-based organizations, but while the main rules governing grant-seeking process have been laid out in rule-making by various agencies, they often change from administration to administration.

The measure is pending.
