The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office honored the memory Deputy John Mecklenburg on July 3, 2018. Mecklenburg was killed in the line of duty, in the early morning hours, on July 3, 2011. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard stood guard at the Fallen Deputies Memorial located in front of the Sheriff’s Office headquarters on July 3, 2018 from 0700 to 0900.
Deputy Mecklenburg and several other law enforcement officers were in vehicle pursuit of a fleeing felon. For causes unknown, Deputy Mecklenburg’s vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree in Pasco County.
Deputy Mecklenburg, a two-year veteran of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, was transported by helicopter to St. Joseph’s Hospital. Doctors and surgeons fought to save Deputy Mecklenburg’s life, unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries. He left behind a wife, two small children, and several other family members and friends.
