Property insurance reform, reducing toll costs, and hurricane recovery are top on legislators’ agenda when they meet in a special session slated for this week.
In a memo sent to lawmakers, Senate President Kathleen Passidomo (R-Naples) outlined a trio of bills that went onto the State Senate Floor on Dec. 13.
Among them is SB2A, filed by Sen. Jim Boyd (R – Bradenton) and referred to the committees on Banking and Insurance and Fiscal Policy.
Specifically, the proposed measure will shore up state-run Citizens Property Insurance to reduce taxpayer liability and increase reinsurance access to stabilize the insurance marketplace. It will also expedite claim notice and investigations, modifying the prompt pay law to benefit policyholders.
Meanwhile, SB 4A, filed by Sen. Travis Hutson (R- St. Augustine) and referred to the Committees on Community Affairs and Fiscal Policy, will provide relief for those recovering and rebuilding from Hurricanes Ian and Nicole, including tax relief for owners of destroyed homes, housing assistance for displaced Floridians and funding for reconstructing beaches and essential water infrastructure that were impacted by the storms.
Finally, SB 6A would appropriate funding for a statewide program to reduce the cost of tolls for frequent commuters. That bill was filed by Sen. Nick DiCeglie (R-Indian Rocks Beach) and referred to the Committee on Fiscal Policy. Florida’s special legislative session is slated to continue through Dec. 16.
