As temperatures drop across Florida, Hernando County nonprofit agencies are doing their part in helping residents stay warm and healthy in what is proving to be a brutal winter across the nation.
People Helping People In Hernando County is an interfaith community established to provide food and basic necessities to needy individuals. The core mission of this agency, based in Spring Hill, has a “focus on feeding children, seniors, homeless and families.” (phphernando.org). “We have coats, scarves, blankets, definitely foods,” said Kendra Kenney, executive director of People Helping People in Hernando County, Inc. “During this unlike typical Florida weather, People Helping People wants to help those who are unsheltered or without heat by providing these items.”
People Helping People is located at 1396 Kass Circle, Spring Hill. The agency will be closed 12/31 and 1/1/23 for the holidays. Donations are accepted; call (352) 686-4466 for more information.
Jericho Road Ministries, Inc., is a Rescue Mission that began in December 1998 and now includes shelters, recovery programs, food distribution, and social enterprises. A nonprofit organization based at 16176 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville, Jericho this winter is collaborating with Hernando County Emergency Management to offer Cold Weather Shelters until conditions improve.
“We encourage people to call (352) 799-2912 for more information about the shelters,” said Nathan Stauffer, vice president of communications at Jericho Road.
Aside from offering a variety of supplies to help residents deal with colder temperatures, Jericho Road hosts a food distribution twice weekly that offers foods ideal for cold weather conditions, including soups, hot drink mixes, etc. “We offer all of that,” said Stauffer. “Our food distributions are twice a week, every Tuesday and Friday, 9 am to noon, at 1163 Howell Ave., Brooksville.” Call 352-799-2912 for more information. A valid Hernando County photo ID is needed to receive food.
Jericho Road accepts donations, and also hosts four thrift stores across the county offering low cost items of all varieties. And at this time, both Jericho and People Helping People are helping local residents beat the cold.
