The Hernando County Animal Services in Brooksville has resumed all dog related services after an outbreak of Pneumovirus shut down canine services there last month. Canine Pneumovirus is a highly infectious condition that can cause fever, rapid breathing, coughing and sneezing in dogs.
Hernando County Animal Services suspended its canine operations on Nov. 19 after the virus was detected in its kennels. Full services including dog adoptions, intakes, surgeries and rescue transfers resumed at the facility on Dec. 28.
Hernando County’s Staff Veterinarian Dr. Melissa Brady thanked the community for its support during the shutdown.
“The community really stepped up by providing blankets, toys, and food as donations for our dogs, Brady said. “We are grateful for all the support we received from Hernando County leadership and would like to thank all our staff and volunteers that came in to help make sure our dogs’ daily needs were met.”
Though there is no vaccine Canine Pneumovirus Brady said that dog vaccinations are key to preventing other serious conditions in pets.
“Making sure dogs are vaccinated helps prevent the spread of common respiratory diseases found in dogs,” she said.
Even though dog-related services at Hernando County Animal Services have resumed, the virus may still be present in the County. As a result, dog owners are advised to consult a veterinarian if their pets show signs of sneezing, a runny nose, watery eyes, and coughing.
Meanwhile, in appreciation for the community support, Hernando County is waiving all adoption fees starting Wednesday, December 28, through Saturday, January 7. Adoptions can be made at Hernando County Animal Services, 19450 Oliver St. in Brooksville. The facility will be closed on Jan. 3 in observance of New Years Day. It will reopen with regular business hours on Jan. 4.
