To the artistic eye, the earth might very well seem like one big canvas; a beautiful and bountiful artwork of flowers and trees, oceans and lakes, fields and gardens. Perhaps it’s fitting, then, that the Spring Hill Campus Anniversary Celebration of Pasco Hernando State College’s 50th Anniversary and Earth Day and Sustainability Month will feature an art show as an event centerpiece, and so much more. The celebration will be happening on Saturday, April 1, from 10 am – 2 pm at the PHSC Spring Hill Campus, 450 Beverly Ct. in Spring Hill.
This free event offers food, music, games and prizes, entertainment and campus tours. RSVPs are recommended for this unique happening, a part of PHSC’s yearlong 50th Anniversary Celebration (phsc.edu/history), taking place from July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023.
In the eyes of PHSC Provost Amy Anderson, she views Earth Day as a particularly ideal time to commemorate the birthday of a community landmark and institution. “Earth Day is an annual reminder to take care of our planet and the life on it. Earth Day events promote ways to create a cleaner, safer, healthier environment,” Anderson explained. “We focused on it for our celebration because it is critically important that we bring attention to these issues to protect our environment. Taking care of our home for those living on it now and in the future requires personal and group stewardship.”
Now, as guests learn more about how to protect and preserve the planet, they will also get a prime education regarding classes, programs and opportunities available at PHSC. Anderson stated, “I would like people to learn about the programs at PHSC that can lead to rewarding careers and personal fulfillment. I would like people to know how much fun it is to attend classes and events here, how dedicated and helpful the staff and faculty are, and how wonderful our students are. We will have faculty and staff from recruiting, student life, financial aid, the library, student affairs, our apartment maintenance apprenticeship program and more.”
In the meantime, current PHSC students will get the chance to display their rich and polished creative talents, via the Earth Day art show on display in the Rao Musunuru, M.D. Conference Center.
“We included the sustainability art show to give our students a chance to show their impressive talents to our community,” said Anderson. “The students will have paintings and drawings representing different aspects of sustainability, and what sustainability means to them personally.”
Anderson feels that the sustainability art show will do much to sustain, and create, viewer interest in that vast and beautiful artistic canvas known as the Earth. “I believe these pieces of art will create a connection between the viewer and the meaning of the day.”
