The City of Brooksville has agreed to amend an ordinance pertaining to its agreement with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) to provide law enforcement services to the City of Brooksville.
In 2018, the City of Brooksville entered into an Interlocal Agreement with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) for that agency to provide law enforcement services to the City. That agreement was later amended under ordinance to further spell out services the HCSO would provide to the City.
During its April 3 regular meeting, the Brooksville City Council approved the second reading of an ordinance containing further amendments to the agreement, including a provision that the term “police” should refer to a law enforcement officer currently or formerly employed by the City of Brooksville, a Hernando County deputy or other law enforcement agency whether or not under contract with the City of Brooksville to provide law enforcement services.
The measure also puts response to burglar and fire alarms under the jurisdiction of the HCSO, the City of Brooksville Fire Chief, or their representatives. It requires that any individual or group wanting to temporarily close streets for house moving, parades, or other special events such as festivals obtain a permit from the city’s community development department and not the HCSO.
The Council approved the ordinance unanimously and without discussion.
