While the May-Stringer House is closed for the Haunted House fundraiser, several docents took the opportunity to visit the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum, built in 1912, in Inverness. They enjoyed viewing the very informative and creatively displayed exhibits that tell the history of Citrus County from prehistoric times to the modern day. The history of Florida’s top blues performers filled an entire special exhibit room.
In addition to touring the second-floor courtroom (where Elvis appeared in the 1961 film Follow That Dream), the docents were treated to a chance to look at the archival vault and the collections storage room, which are not normally available for public tours. Museum nerds love this kind of information!
Citrus County history is closely entwined with Hernando County history, so the docents appreciated the chance to tour the courthouse. Hernando Historical Museum docents continually study and research Florida history so they can enrich the tours they offer and look forward to more road trips.

The Haunted House takes place on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27 and 28. The doors creak open from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Admission is $10 for ages 13 and up; ages 6 through 12 admission is $5; and ages 5 and under are free; however, parental discretion is advised with any children. The house is meant to be scary. There is an outside fun area for the young ones.
An outdoor ghostfest is a day-long event full of vendors, food, and fun on October 28 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. No admission charge!
