Motorcyclist Jumps into Pond to Elude Authorities

A retention pond proved to offer little cover for a motorcyclist hoping to elude deputies from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).

According to HCSO Community Relations Coordinator Kasey Johnson, HCSO Sgt. J. Johnson carried out a traffic stop on a motorcycle on Dec. 21 at 1:30 a.m. after the operator failed to observe a red traffic light at Commercial Way and Trenton Avenue in Spring Hill.

As Johnson approached the vehicle, the operator, identified as 29-year-old Luis Jose Cabrera, shouted that he had done nothing wrong, then revved the engine, drove the motorcycle in a complete circle in the middle of the roadway, and fled the scene.

When he had lost sight of the vehicle, Johnson made a radio call and described the motorcycle to other deputies on patrol.

Shortly thereafter, another deputy spotted a motorcycle meeting Johnson’s description outside of a restaurant near Commercial Way and Wendy Court.

Deputies subsequently entered the restaurant and approached Cabrera, who ran out of the building and fled on foot when he saw the deputies.

Cabrera then tried to elude the deputies by jumping over a fence into a retention pond.

After a brief conversation, he surrendered to deputies, who later learned that Cabrera was operating an unregistered motorcycle and did not have a motorcycle license.

At the same time,3.1 grams of cocaine was found in Cabrera’s possession.

He was arrested and booked into the Hernando County Detention Center on multiple charges, including fleeing to elude law enforcement, resisting an officer without violence, failure to register a motor vehicle, failure to have a required endorsement on a driver’s license, and possession of cocaine.

He is free on bond and his case is pending.
