Lauren Moon, 30, was sentenced on March 14, 2024, following an investigation into the death of a fellow inmate in the Hernando County Detention Center. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was found unresponsive in her cell on September 28, 2021, after ingesting a combination of Xanax and Fentanyl supplied by Moon.
The incident prompted a swift response from law enforcement and medical personnel, with attempts made to revive the victim before she was transported to a local hospital. Despite efforts, she passed away the following day.
Investigations led detectives to Lauren Moon, the victim’s cellmate, who was subsequently arrested on April 6, 2022, in Lake County, Florida, following the issuance of a warrant. Moon faced charges including Introduction of Contraband in a County Detention Facility, 1st Degree Murder for Death by the Unlawful Distribution of Fentanyl, and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
After months of legal proceedings, Moon appeared in court on March 14, 2024, where she entered an open plea to the charges against her. Both the State Attorney’s Office and the victim’s family agreed to the terms of the plea.
Moon received a sentence of 15 years in prison for Manslaughter and an additional two years for the Introduction of Contraband into a County Detention Center. These sentences are to be served consecutively.
