A good book, in the minds of many, qualifies as a work of literary art. And, a good bookmark, in its own way, can serve as a glowing work of sublime visual art. This is certainly true of the lovely quartet of entries featured in the Hernando County Public Library System Library Card Design Contest—all of which were created by library system patrons.

The vision of an ebullient painted sunset; A flawless drawing of bookshelves filled with interesting tomes, along with other interesting resources found at the library; A stunning kaleidoscope of radiant butterflies arising in a majestic flight above the pages of a freshly opened book; Another book opens to reveal a lush fantasy story of ethereal mermaids and other mystical creatures; These are the four finalist designs in the contest that challenge book lovers to express their love for literature and the library through art.

“Throughout the month of April, the Hernando County Public Library gave residents the opportunity to see their artwork featured on an upcoming library card design!” said Jennifer Hodges, Branch Supervisor, Spring Hill Branch Library. “This new card will be available beginning in September during Library Card Sign-Up Month. Kids, teens and adults were encouraged to share their best designs for a chance to win.”

The library system established a set of specific creative criteria for the creation of these very special bookmarks.

“We were looking for designs that showcase the value of the Hernando County Public Library, what the library means to you, and designs that capture the magic of libraries, the joy of getting lost in a book, the thrill of discovering new information, or the welcoming atmosphere that brings people together.”

Hodges reported that the Hernando public answered the call and submitted a plethora of beautiful bookmarks to the Library Card Design Contest.

“Approximately 100 entry forms were picked up, and 20 entries were submitted,” Hodges explained. “Staff at each of the four (4) library branches selected a winning design to represent their location. One of those four (4) designs will be chosen as the overall winner by the public.”

The four (4) choices are:
#1 “Sunset Dreams” submitted to the Main Library.
#2 “Books and Other Stuff” submitted to the East Hernando Branch.
#3 “Let Your Imagination Soar” submitted to the Spring Hill Branch.
#4 “Mermaid Tales” submitted to the West Hernando Branch.

“The public may vote on the designs in person or on Facebook through Wednesday, June 5. The winning design will be announced on Friday, June 7,” said Hodges.

Hodges is eager to behold the winning design of the Library Card Design Contest. “We can’t wait to see your creative vision come to life on the new library cards,” said Hodges.

We can’t wait to see the finished card with the design,” said Cindy Loftis-Culp, library director.
