Spring football brought upon us a lot of questions and answers for the public schools within Hernando County. As expected, the top teams remain steady where they’re at. We take a closer look at what has transpired throughout the spring and what to watch for heading into what will be a busy off-season for prep football in Florida.
Nature Coast has a quarterback battle ongoing
It seems like the rich got richer when Vaughn Sykora transferred from Weeki Wachee to Nature Coast Technical after the 2018 season, but now the former is battling last year’s starter Fabian Burnett, who guided the Sharks to the Class 5A, Region 2 championship game. Both quarterbacks had their chances to impress during the spring game against George Jenkins. This battle between Sykora and Burnett will carry into the summer.
Hernando has some new pieces to keep in place
Two things we know about Hernando heading into the off-season. One we know the Leopards’ defense will be a tough unit, as they held Groveland South Lake to zero points in Hernando’s 7-0 spring ball win. The second thing is Hernando will have to find out more about themselves over the summer through 7-on-7 leagues and tournaments, as the Leopards will need to create some continuity on offense.
Central looks much improved
The Bears pulling off a victory at all is a huge improvement for a club that was shutout several times during the 2018 season. Central scored 34 points against a Dunedin squad that faced tough competition in Pinellas County. Now Central will need to carry that confidence into the off-season and hope to bring that into the 2019 campaign.
Weeki Wachee a work in progress
The Hornets are transitioning from a pass-oriented team to a run-first club under the direction of new head coach Chris Cook. Weeki Wachee wasn’t able to score in its 40-0 loss to Clearwater Calvary Christian in the spring and the Hornets will need to continue working on the offense during the summer.
