So this one is a little different, as so often, I have a certain “style” of writing when usually telling a story.
This poem does have a story behind it in the way that it came about. I have been to a few different businesses in the past week (and one of them was a car sales lot). In those big glass buildings, there were plenty of people who were doing their part of the job in cubicles. I can say that in my employment, I have done a lot of traveling, as well as some factory and office trailer set up work. I have never had a job where I was “parked” in a cubicle.
Now, I am not slighting those who work in these settings, as they are mostly doing important jobs, (and bringing home a paycheck to help your family is considered VERY IMPORTANT!
This is a “salute” to those that endure long hours, and tedious, repetitive working conditions, in those “special little areas” that are called CUBICLES!
Let me tell you a story, and I`ll try not to lie.
I`ve been on many a mission, staring death in the eye.
I`ve fought Lion and Tiger, Gorilla and Bear,
And I`ve done all of these things, from my cubicle chair.
I`ve made fortunes in metals (like Silver and Gold),
I blew it all in my youth, so now I`m broke when I`m old.
And I`ve danced with the Nobles. The rich and the poor.
I was the life of the party, while on the dance floor.
You never could tell this from way over there,
I`m just another poor bloke in a cubicle chair.
Let me tell you one more thing, while I have your attention,
Of these scars that you see here, (and on places I can`t mention).
They came at a price and I wish they would go,
But they`re hardly a notice when the lights are down low.
I could use a good tan, as these lights aren`t real bright.
To see me now in my swimsuit would cause a real fright!
Now you`ll not hear me murmur or cry in despair,
because I am the master of my cubicle chair!

Steve Goodwin is a recently retired Christian conservative veteran (of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division), who still feels that “duty to country” did not end when the military uniform got hung up. He and his wife Cecelia live on the edge of a beautifully wooded tract of land just south of the bypass, and are involved in not only church activities, but also attend school board meetings and local community action events as well.
