Anne of Avonlea, the Musical is an original musical production, written by David Sanborn, Ellen Sanborn, and Randi Olsen, lovingly based on Anne of Green Gables, the bestselling 1908 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery.

A work of fiction for readers of all ages, the timeless literary classic has been considered a children’s novel since the mid-twentieth century. It recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, a young orphan girl, age 11, who is mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who have a farm on Prince Edward Island and who had intended to adopt a boy to help them. The novel recounts how Anne makes her way with the Cuthberts, in school and within the town.

Since publication, Anne of Green Gables has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into 20 languages. Numerous sequels were written by Montgomery, and since her death another sequel has been published, as well as an authorized prequel. The original book is taught to students around the world.

“Those of you who have read the book will truly enjoy seeing your familiar characters brought to life,” said Vince Van, spokesman for the Live Oak Theatre.. “There are over 60 students involved in the production. Act One is devoted to Anne’s earlier years with well over 30 young students playing young Anne and her young friends. Act Two focuses on Anne and her friends as teenagers. Obviously, this act features our teen students.

“It will be fun to watch how the teen characters adopt so many of the characteristics of their much younger counterparts,” he said.

“This is the third time we have performed this show,” Vanni added. “In fact, it was the very first show we ever did 16 years ago. We did it again when we were in-residence at Faith Evangelical Presbyterian Church, ten years ago.”

Adult seats cost $25; children 13 and under are $10 (with the purchase of an adult seat). To reserve seats, visit https://www.liveoaktheatre.org/current-production , email [email protected], or call 352-593-0027. Follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/LiveOakTheatre.
